    Jewellery played an important role in the life of the Vikings. The masterpieces of craftsmanship reflect the importance of their wearer. The cross-shaped pendant is ca. 1,000 years old and is part of a larger hoard which was washed up to one of the beaches of Hiddensee in a storm tide in 1872. The main motives are a bird's head and a braided onament. This piece of jewellery is considered as a particularly fine example of Viking Age goldsmithery.
    Each pendant is individually packed in a felt bag.
    Founding, gold-coloured.

    Jewellery played an important role in the life of the Vikings. The masterpieces of crafts-manship reflect the importance of their wearer. The amulet dates from the 10th century and was found in the famous Viking settlement of Haithabu/Hedeby. The original gold-plated pendant was decorated with a loop ornament made of filigree wire and gold granules. The present piece was cast. The cross motif shows the influence of Christianity in 10th century Viking life.
