The amulet dates from the 10th century and was found in the famous Viking settlement of Haithabu/Hedeby. The original gold-plated pendant was decorated with a loop ornament made of filigree wire and gold granules. The present piece was cast. The cross motif shows the influence of Christianity in 10th century Viking life.

The main motives are a bird's head and a braided onament. This piece of jewellery is considered as a particularly fine example of Viking Age goldsmithery.
