The amulet dates from the 10th century and was found in the famous Viking settlement of Haithabu/Hedeby. The original gold-plated pendant was decorated with a loop ornament made of filigree wire and gold granules. The present piece was cast. The cross motif shows the influence of Christianity in 10th century Viking life.
